Brand History

Renzo Russo, the founder of Diesel, began sewing jeans at only 15 using his mother's sewing machine. Initially, he would wear them himself and sell his design to his friends. Following his passion, Russo attended a textile manufacturing high school. Renzo Russo began working at clothing manufacturer Moltex in 1976 and two years later, in 1978 with the help of his father, he bought a 40% share in the company and renamed it Diesel creating the fashion giant we know today. Russo ended up buying the rest of the company in 1985. Throughout the 90s, Russo’s unconventional marketing experiments made Diesel a household name. Though the brand became a massive success, it also generated its fair share of controversies, which some might argue only made Diesel even more popular. At the end of the 90s in 1997, Diesel was one of the first fashion brands to launch an online retail website showcasing its collections. Now even after almost half a century, the brand's constant innovation and pushing of the norm continue to keep Diesel at the forefront of the fashion industry.
